International broadcasting giant CBS bought Network Ten more than six months ago after snatching the free-to-air broadcaster away from under the nose of Lachlan Murdoch and Bruce Gordon. But there have been precious few highlights since for the Americans with Ten struggling in the ratings and losing the race for cricket broadcast rights.
Ten’s network audience share has been dropping since January, with OzTAM figures showing a decline from 32.8 per cent of the total audience to about 20 per cent by late-April for metro audiences from 6pm to midnight. Year-on-year, total audience figures for Ten are down about 2 per cent .
April also marked the month when News Corp’s pay-TV platform Foxtel and rival broadcaster Seven West Media won the rights to broadcast domestic cricket, including Ten’s crown jewel Big Bash League.
Rival executives and industry veterans have predictably described this as a “nail in the coffin” for the beleaguered network, saying there was little that could be done to help its “weak ratings”.
However, Ten’s chief content officer Beverley McGarvey shrugged off the description of the ratings so far as “weak”, preferring to describe them as “flat”.
