The Washington Nationals called off their suspended game and regularly-scheduled game with the New York Yankees around 4 p.m. on Wednesday at Nationals Park, as a light rain fell with more expected in the forecast the rest of the evening.
The games will be made up on June 18 at 5:05 p.m., according to the Nationals.
The teams were scheduled to begin play at 5:05 p.m. Wednesday with the game tied 3-3 going into the last of the sixth inning, picking up from when play was halted by rain on Tuesday night.
Both teams have off Thursday, but the Yankees begin a series in Kansas City on Friday and there was concern about hotel rooms for the Yankees in the Washington area on Wednesday night.
While the Nationals are off Thursday, Nationals Park has been reserved for the annual MS benefit for Washington first baseman Ryan Zimmerman.
Zimmerman told 106.7 The Fan on Wednesday, before the games were rained out, that his MS event was still slated to be held Thursday. There is rain in the forecast for much of Thursday and during the weekend.
Washington ace Max Scherzer (7-1, 1.69) was slated to pitch in the regular-scheduled game on Wednesday against the Yankees.
The Nationals are 24-18 and began Wednesday 1.5 games back of the first-place Atlanta Braves. The Yankees are 28-12 and entered Wednesday one game ahead of the Boston Red Sox in the American League East.
Washington begins a three-game series with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday at Nationals Park. The Dodgers entered Wednesday with a record of 16-25 and had lost five games in a row. The Dodgers are 8-12 on the road this season.
